Season 5- Week Five - Nashville Star

Originals Night: Win, Lose, or Draw

By Jan Duke, About.com

From the First Season on, Originals Night has always been know as the pick-it or skip-it night of the Nashville Star series. Every year, this night has pretty much determined the ultimate winner of Nashville Star. Let the music begin.

Veteran Randy Owen got up on stage and showed the world what a true Music Icon is and why he is among them. Not only did Randy have a spectacular performance, he also showed the knowledge and wisdom of a true Star by sharing the limelight with the back-up band. Way to Go Randy! Show them how it's suppose to be done!

In an unusual twist, the contestants were then split into two groups, the top 3 with the highest votes in one and the two with the lowest votes in another. So, from the get go we know that Zach, Angela, and David were going on to next week's show.

Furthermore it was announced that all would be able to perform their original songs tonight. The big twist will occur at the end of the show when it's announced that due to some viewing issues last week that no one will be sent home this week.

First up was Joshua Stevens performing a song about his birth mother entitled "I Wish I Missed You." Oh boy this was an emotional and heartfelt song. We were glad that Joshua was around long enough to showcase his writing abilities as we think they are much stronger than his vocals.

Next up was Whitney Duncan performing "Skinny Dippin." While were were very impressed with this fun and lighthearted song and her performance at the regionals, we felt that tonight it was lacking.

Next would be what we thought was the best performance of the night. Zach Hacker got up and did a command performance of "If it Wasn't for the Whiskey." I don't think there was a dry eye in the place, even Zach's dad was shown with tears in his eyes.
Zach's song told a painful story of what drinking can do to a family. His performance and song showed that he really could be the next Nashville Star. Yes we think he whooped the tar out of his sister's performance tonight along with everyone else's too. Impeccable!

Next up was a visit and performance from former Nashville Star Two Alumni, Lance Miller. Lance is now signed to Warner and is getting ready to go on tour.
Since Nashville Star he has also become a proud dad too..Congrats Lance! Lance performed "She Really Loves Me." We really liked the new polished look and sound of Lance and we like that his song had Merle Haggard ring to it too.

David St.Romain would take the stage next with "Wide Open Sky". We think David has a wonderful vocals, his song was somewhat disappointing to us as we expected his songwriting skills to match up to his vocals which they didn't.

We were also somewhat disappointed in Angela Hackers performance tonight. While her song, "Losing You Ain't a Total Loss" was well written, her performance, was in our opinion one of her worse yet as she got off to a very rocky start.
This was the first time we have seen Angela falter and we still have concerns as to how Music Row will be able to handle Angela. But, hey, if you're going to be beat it's better to be beat by a family member..I think.

Inside Nashville Star:
As usual there were several former Nashville Star contestants to be seen in the audience, but the sexy and multi-talented, James Slater went almost totally un-noticed by everyone. James has had his music performed by some of Nashville's Elite including: Martina McBride, Tim McGraw, Lorrie Morgan and more.
Speaking of music, Cowboy Troy's sophomore album is due out pretty soon and we hear that he not only co-produced this one but that it is a really deep and encompasses some serious subject matter. The CD is entitled "Black in the Saddle."

Set List:
Joshua Stevens (lose)- I Wish I Missed You
Whitney Duncan (draw)- Skinny Dippin
Zach Hacker (win)- If it Wasn't for the Whiskey
David St. Romain (draw)- Wide Open Sky
Angela Hacker (draw)- Losing You Ain't a Total Loss

Till Next week,
Jan
