Season 4- Week One - Nashville Star Premiere
There are a few changes this season including the addition of a new set of hosts, Cowboy Troy and Wynonna, and a new rotating guest judge who will join returning judges Anastasia Brown and Phil Vassar.
Erika Jo, Jason Meadows, and Jayron Weaver were all on hand in the audience to help kick off the season premiere. Contestants had their own group of fans on hand for the first show. I have to say Murfreesboro's own Chris Young had the most fans in the audience supporting him. The show kicked off with a performance of Coming To Your City by Big & Rich as 10 nervous contestants waited for their turn to shine and dazzle the crowd.
Casey Rivers kicked off the show with George Strait's song Heartland. Casey has strong vocals and looks to be one of the favorites of the judges. Anastasia commented after his performance that he made her toes curl, while Phil Vassar said he needed a little more stage presence.
Melanie Torres belted out Martina McBride's When God Fearing Women Get The Blues. You can tell she has been on a stage before but not as a performer but as a beauty contestant. Phil said she "Rocked The Kasbah", but Anastasia suggested she gets away from her beauty pageant performances.
Nicole Jamrose was Pickin Wildflowers but at times I thought was over shadowed by the backup singers. Big & Rich thought Nicole was very attractive and gave off a sexual energy while Anastasia commented she did not raise the bar high enough.
Chris Young had the women screaming with his rendition of Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off. I hope his grandmother wasn't shocked by his song choice. Phil commented that he sounded too much like Joe Nichols but a great singer nonetheless. Anastasia and Big & Rich both think Chris has what it takes.
Jared Ashley served his county in the Navy and chose to sing Hicktown. Jared lacks a bit in the stage presence in my opinion. Phil thought it was a great song choice for him while Anastasia was under the impression that it would be his first and last appearance on the show.
Monique LeCompte sang the Faith & Tim duet Like We Never Loved At All. She has a beautiful voice but according to the judges she is better suited to be in New York on Broadway rather than Nashville Star.
Shy Blakeman rocked the crowd to Don't It make You Wanna Dance. It's easy to tell that Shy has performed before. Anastasia thought it was a garage band performance. Phil and Big & Rich both enjoyed his performance. Make sure you look at Shy's feet when he's onstage, like Pat Greene, he also doesn't wear any shoes while on stage.
Kristin McNamera chose I Wanna Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart. She lacks in stage presence but the girl sure can yodel! Again Anastasia didn't think the song choice was right for Nashville Star. She was the only one who thought so.
Matt Mason sang Touch Me, Turn Me On and Burn Me Down. Personally I thought in parts of his performance he almost shouted more than he sang. The judges didn't agree with my opinion and the over all reaction was that he was HOT HOT HOT. Wynonna even told Matt she thought he was mysterious, dark and handsome.
Jewels Hanson was the evening's last performer. She sang Montgomery Gentry's Gone. She has a deep sultry voice and worked the stage. The judges all seemed to love her. I guess they didn't love her that much as she was the first contestant voted off the show by the judges!
* Tip of the Week- Greapevine has it that a certain former Nashville Star contestants manager is hosting a weekly party every Tuesday night at the Gibson Showcase with live entertainment, but the best part is that it's open to the public and the cover is only $5
Till Next Week...Live from the Acuff Theatre
