Labor Day has been celebrated in the United States for over 100 years (history). This celebration is officially celebrated on the 1st Monday of September in order that we may honor all of the workers and laborers who work hard to support themselves and their families.

Many old-timers will also remember when, as children, it used to mark the beginning of the school year and was an especially wondrous time to say good-bye to the frivolous summer days.

Nowadays, most Middle Tennessee Schools start their year off in early to mid August and so this bit of special late summer nostalgia has been lost to future generations.

In Nashville, Labor Day unofficially marks the end of the summer and is usually celebrated with family and friends. It's the summer's last hurrah as well as being the last 3-day weekend of the summer. Labor Day Weekend can be celebrated as easily as sitting poolside with a few friends to taking a last minute weekend getaway.

One of the most popular things to do on Labor day weekend in Middle Tennessee is to go boating and if that's in your plans please be cautious as the local lakes and waterways will be filled to the brim over Labor Day Weekend. If you're a land-lovers, there's plenty to do including:

Enjoy a Family Picnic
Take your family on a picnic to one of numerous Nashville's Parks or Tennessee State Parks for a day of outdoor fun and family celebrations.

Dip into a Water Park
Within a few days, most of the local water parks will be closing up for the season so this weekend is about your last chance to let the kids get a bit wet & wild.

Go Shopping
While school has been in session for a few weeks by now, it's the perfect time to find a few good Labor Day Sales around town.

Shake it up with Shakespeare
For over 20 years, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival has hosted "Shakespeare in the Park." This event usually takes place from mid-August through the weekend after Labor Day at the Centennial Park Bandshell on Thursday-Sunday evenings and it also includes a special Labor Day (Monday) performance.

Take a Quick Trip
For the day or weekend, there's plenty of last minute getaways from visiting a nearby theme park to cruising the Trace for the day and all will satisfy the traveler in you.
