2/7-2/9 Harmonic Convergence
John Adams' riveting Harmonielehre combines the spare design of minimalism with the expressive, all-encompassing sound of late Romanticism to create music that, in the composer's words, "touches you in the center of your soul." The work's title refers to a book by the modernist master Schoenberg, who is represented here by his powerful A Survivor from Warsaw, a moving tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. Ives' "cosmic drama" The Unanswered Question sets the tone for this evening with music that is at once universal and deeply personal, with moments of haunting beauty and restless energy. The same can be said of Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto, a piece originally written for the great Mstislav Rostropovich and performed here by irrepressible Johannes Moser.2/10 Ken Cowan
Praised for his dazzling artistry, impeccable technique and imaginative programming, Ken Cowan has developed a reputation as one of North America's finest concert organists. Recently featured in a recording of works by Franz Liszt, he can be heard often on the American Public Media program Pipe-dreams.2/15-2/17 Attitude
A night of contemporary dance, Attitude offers Nashville a mixed bill of live music and relevant, contemporary works from some of the country's most unique, cutting edge choreographers including Ploughing the Dark from Sarah Slipper, The Whistling from Dominic Walsh and a brand new yet-to-be-named world premiere from Gina Patterson. Attitude will be held at TPAC's Polk Theater for three performances February 15 - 17, 2013.2/16 Beethoven Lives Upstairs
A fantastic introduction to the music of Beethoven! Featuring the stage troupe Classical Kids Live, this production offers a unique look into the life of the great Viennese composer, as viewed through the eyes of a young boy named Christoph. As he hears some of the composer's most beautiful music, Christoph comes to understand the genius of Beethoven, the beauty of his music and the torment of his deafness.2/16 The Singing Tortoise
Based on a West African folk tale, The Singing Tortoise teaches children the value of keeping your word and respecting others, though dance, music and narration. This children’s ballet tells the story of a hunter named Ama who meets a magical singing tortoise in the forest. Ama promises not to tell anyone about the tortoise’s talent, but breaks his word and suffers the consequences. Children can learn what it takes to dance like Ama and the tortoise in an interactive demonstration following the performance. The Singing Tortoise will be held at TPAC’s Polk Theater Saturday, February 16, 2013.2/21-2/23 The Chieftains
The world's most famous Irish band are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Still as vibrant and relevant today as they were five decades ago, The Chieftains use their sparkling, tradition-steeped musicianship to explore fresh new ideas, making the music their own with a style that is as exhilarating as it is definitive.2/28-3/2 Tchaikovsky Meets Techno
Electrifying! Equally at home in the concert hall and the nightclub, Mason Bates has made a splash with his cutting-edge music, which incorporates the rhythms and textures of electronic music with vibrant orchestral writing. The Nashville Symphony will be one of the first ensembles in the country to perform his brand-new Violin Concerto, a vehicle for the stunning talents of Anne Akiko Meyers. Creating a conversation across centuries, we’ll follow that with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, a cathartic work that — much like Beethoven’s Fifth — finds the composer triumphing over adversity. Copland’s colorful El Salón México opens the evening with lively Latin rhythms.9 to 5
