Description

Guide Review - Soul of the South- Book Review

The Soul of the South tells a tale of William Lytham, a dashing young soldier from Mobile Alabama and his life during the Civil War. His escapades take him everywhere from our nations capital to Europe, serving the southern cause as a cunning spy, esteemed soldier and even a diplomat.
The adventures of William Lytham accurately follow the real life history of the Civil war although the main characters tales tend to be a bit glamorous and somewhat unbelievable. The author, while keeping in timeline with the events of the Civil War, did not show the more common real life struggles and devastation that the Civil War had on the south.

The highlights of the novel were several of the emotional inner thoughts of the main character and others. They spoke about wretched division of the nation, the intense love and hate among its people and the need for the war to be over so the nation could once again be united as it should be.

Excerpt:
"Truly this is a sad war. We were once united Americans, occupants of the greatest nation on earth with the best fighters in the world: now we are being torn asunder, with each killing the best of the other…I wish it were all a bad dream."
