Getting the Lowdown on the Locash Cowboys

Fan Club, Funny Moments & Music

From Nora Mayor, for About.com

If you have never heard of Locash Cowboys, heard their music, or seen one of their shows you are truly missing out. Locash Cowboys are newly signed to Montage, an independent label. The duo of Chris & Preston have a long career ahead of them and put on one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. They are not only great musicians they are both very down to earth and funny.

Nora: When you guys are getting ready for a show what determines your set list?
Preston & Chris: The audience does.
Chris: We never have a set list our band gets so mad at us. We have signs like baseball signs. Sometimes I look like a fool talking about singing I'll Fly Away and I'm flying like a bird but the band knows exactly what we're playing.
Preston: Sometimes but very rarely we'll over ride each other. That's one of our biggest strengths is being able to read an audience and know what they want right then or what needs to happen and it's never the same thing twice. Sometimes I don't even know what's coming until the music starts and that's pretty cool. There's certain weapons we use at certain times and it help deliver that knock out punch.
Chris: For the most part we are 99% together on decisions. We just need that little peak from the crowd.

Nora: What is one of your most requested songs at shows?
Preston & Chris: Purple Rain, HotLittleCutiePieSexyThang (they wait for it all night)
Preston: Boom Boom has been getting a lot of requests. Let's Make Love Right Now.
Chris: Our new stuff is really hitting really hard right now.

Nora: Any idea when fans can look forward to a new CD coming out?
Preston: Yea hopefully we're hoping to have a single out by our big CRS show coming up on March 1st. I'm just hoping we have something out by summer because we tour so hard in the summer.

Nora: Is there a Locash fan club coming or is one already in the works?
Preston: There have been a few times when it's almost happened but we didn't realize that a fan club is an actual business and that's one thing that Tony Conway really watched over with us. He doesn't want to pull the trigger on a fan club quite yet because when we do it he wants it to be done right. He's never had an interest in anything but the well being of us as an act.
Chris: Whatever Tony says goes we listen.

Nora: Will Boom Boom and other songs you do be on the CD?
Preston: We hope but we don't really know what's going to happen with our music. I'll be happy if one of our songs gets on the album and I don't care if it's a hidden track that you have to press rewind past the first song to find it. I will be ecstatic if one of the songs we've written is on there just because it will bring some of our personality. If someone said we had to do Mary Had A Little Lamb we could rock it out somehow.
Chris: If the label decides our first album maybe none of our songs are on it we'll push for it the next album.

Nora: Okay this question is for all of the ladies. Are you guys single?
Preston: We are not married. Preston is S-I-N-G-L-E and loving it.
Chris: The main thing is we are not married so officially we are single but we date around. I've been dating somebody but it's hard in this business.

Nora: What is one thing that you guys absolutely cannot live without?
Chris: The stage. We've had 10 days off and I am going insane. We call each other constantly dude we gota get out of here, dude we gota get out of here. It's an addiction but a good addiction.
Preston: Yea we have to have the stage without the stage we're like fish out of water. We know we're touching people and at the end of day that's what matters to us. We want to send people home feeling like they had a smile on their face like they haven't had in years. We have people tell us that we remind them of their sons who have gone to college or a loved one who has passed away. It's a sad conversation to have but also very meaningful because you have brought something back into their lives that they haven't seen maybe in years.
Chris: I don't know what it is we got but it works and it makes people feel good. We got this e-mail the other day with a picture of a little girl opening a Locash Cowboys CD. Her face had tears in her eyes and she was screaming. You can't fake that. We got that picture right before New Years and that told us right there we did our job this year.

Nora: What has been one of your funniest moments?
Chris: I think I broke this ladies hip during one of our shows at the Missouri State Fair. We got her up on stage to dance with us and I was doing little booty moves and she wouldn't dance next to me. Finally she comes over and dances next to me and I guess I booty banged her a little to hard, I barely touched this woman and she fell down. The music and everything stopped because this woman was down and the crowd was booing me. She wouldn't even let me help her up. When she finally got up and was being helped off stage the whole audience cheered like they do when an injured person on a sports team gets up and helped off the field.

Note: I've edited Preston's funniest moment so if anyone wants to know the whole story you will just have to ask Preston yourself. I will say that Preston's funniest moment took place after the 2004 CMT Music Awards, which he and Chris choreographed the opening number for. After the show Preston got his butt pinched by a very well known person in the music industry. He found out later that that is how you know that this individual likes you.

Nora: What CD is in your CD player right now?
Chris: Brian McKnight and the new Keith Urban
Preston: The Ranch or Justin Timberlake and I have Little Big Town in there to I've been studying their songs a lot.
