An Inside Look at John Bohlinger and his life as a Nashville Musician

The Road to Nashville and Beyond

From Jan Duke, for About.com

Jan: How did guy like you, from Montana, end up entrenched in the Nashville Music Scene?
John: I loaded up my 1976 VW van with my then wife, our four year old son, a couple guitars and a box full of songs and immediately found success as a waiter here in Nashville. Eventually, through lots of free gigs and many fruitless meetings, I got a publishing deal and a long series of major label sideman gigs.

Jan: John, many people don't know that along with being a great musician, you've also have got a pretty good educational resume going, can you tell us more about your educational background?
John: I graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University in New York with a degree in English Lit. (that just shows you how over rated the whole Ivy League thing is). Much later during an identity crisis, I worked toward a Ph D in Psych.
I eventually came to my senses, dropped out and jumped back into music. If God makes you a Gypsy, you are a Gypsy.. I've resigned myself to this fact.

Jan: Your dad is the Lieutenant Governor of Montana, can you tell us what was like growing up in a political family?
John: My dad was just a working class guy when I was growing up. Once I left, he got into politics. He's one of those wonderful idealists who strive daily for his community's greater good.

Jan: Do you think it affected your values? And why?
John: Sure, I learned all that solid American stuff like; Treat people well, Work hard, Say your prayers.

Jan: We were sorry to hear of the recent passing of your mom, can you tell us one of your fondest memories of her?
John: Cancer forced my mom back into the hospital in January of this year. She was funny and up beat.. she asked what my schedule was like for the next few days and I said I was leaving for a long radio tour with Megan Mullins but will be free on the weekends.
She said. "Well, I just saw you a week ago but I'm checking out pretty soon. I don't want you to miss any gigs so when I die in the next day or so, I'll have them put me on ice until you get a break on the week end." Like I said, if God makes you a Gypsy...

Jan: Do you have a fan club? Working on one?
My label, Farm2Market, has put together a cool website for me and there's contact info on that.

Jan: So what are you working on now and what can your fans expect to see from you in the near future?
John: My new album, JohnGo Solo is coming out at the first of the year and I'm currently working its promotion. Nashville Star's Fifth Season is coming up soon too and it's going to be the best season yet. Band Member, Megan Mullin's also has an upcoming album being released that is going to be super too. So it's shaping up to be a great year!

Jan: John, Thanks again for sharing a little bit about your self with us. Can you tell us where we can buy your music?
John: Go to johnbohlinger.com. Buy one for everyone you know.
