There's a lot to see, do, and attend in Nashville and around the Middle Tennessee area but there's no doubt that the Nashville Flooding in May will definitely hold a spot in Nashville History and in my mind forever.
Yet, with all of the mayhem, I did find a little time to put together a Best of Nashville this year with of some of my favorite places, events, businesses, and people that I've come across in my travels during the past year in hopes that you too will be able to take some time to go out and explore Nashville, a city that's just filled with tons of history, diversity, culture, and, of course, music.
Best Annual Event: Tomato ArtFest
East Nashville's Annual Tomato ArtFest is normally held the 2nd week of August and this annual event offers a really unique day of festivities and entirely way to much tomato related fun.
Best Charity: Hands on Nashville
Within hours of the realizing that the Flood of Nashville was turning into a major diaster, the folks over at Hands on Nashville went to hard work to mobilize the entire community. With their help, the food, supplies and massive amounts of volunteers came in fast to help those in need.
Best Day Trip: Jack Daniels Distillery
Most will say the smooth taste of Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey comes from the local iron free waters and hard sugar maple charcoal filtering but once you've visited Lynchburg you will know that there's another very special ingredient in every bottle of this smooth southern whiskey
Best Exhibit: Chihuly at Cheekwood
Glass works by world-famous Dale Chihuly, the most acclaimed glass artist of our time transformed Cheekwood Museum and Botanical Gardens into a wonderland of colors. This dramatic Chihuly exhibit, displayed indoors as well as out, offered a spectacular display of color and plenty of unique art forms around every corner.
Best Historic Spot: Indigo Hotel
As the economy continued to take a nose-dive, the super folks of the Indigo Hotel bravely endured the downward spiral to open up yet another hotel in Nashville. But the major highlight is that they actually chose to renovate one of Nashville's historic downtown buildings to welcome their new guests
Best Neighborhood: Bellevue
There's no mistaking the massive amount of flood damage that was done, this past May, to the Bellevue Community. But they pulled together and even though there is still damage, thier spirit is on-going inspiration and a tribute to Tennesseans across the state.
Best News: Opryland Hotel Re-Opens
After the massive flooding in May, there's no doubt that the re-opening of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Resort, just in time for all of their Christmas Festivites, was an extra special present for locals and visitors alike.
Best Politics: Tennessee State Fairgrounds
Yes, the Tennessee State Fairgrounds made my list for the second year in a row and Yes, most everyday folks are still asking why our local government has decided that it's in Nashville's best interest to cease operations of the fairgrounds...after over 100 years? The saga continues...
Best Tour: Nashville Art Crawls
Nashville now has a total of five monthly Art Crawl styled events including three Art Crawls, one Art Stroll, and one Social. Three of the Art Crawls are held the first week of every month, and the Social in the second week, and the Art Stroll is held on the last Saturday of the month.
Best Venue: Fontanel Mansion
The Fontanel Mansion & Farm, is located minutes from Downtown Nashville, in quaint Whites Creek Neighborhood. The Mansion is not just a home tour nor is it just a museum - it's really an entire complex filled with numerous and varying things to see and do. Fontanel has the mansion, a farmhouse restaurant, a very impressive outdoor music venue, a studio, and plenty of great walking trails.
