"
Fiancé wants prenuptial agreement!"

Dear Dave –

I’ve been asked to sign a prenuptial agreement. I feel it’s morally wrong for a potential mate to ask this of me, because it’s like planning a divorce before I plan my future. He says this is insurance in case things go wrong. At this time I’ve declined to marry this man. I’d like your opinion on this subject.

Margie via email

Dear Margie,

You’ve made a very difficult but very wise decision. I would not marry someone who wanted a prenuptial agreement. Never marry someone who loves their money more than they love you.

It sounds to me like this person is concerned that you’re not going to turn out to be the person you say you are. This relationship either needs to end or be extended for a very long time so you can make sure if he’s the right person to marry.

The only time I think a pre-nup would be even open for discussion is if you have over $10 million dollars. Even then it’s really bad medicine, but dealing with $10 million isn’t your normal new marriage anyway so that would require a lot of very careful relationship decisions.
