Nashville Star - Original Songs Review

Review of Week 4 - Nashville Star 2 - March 27, 2004

From Carolyn, for About.com

Third performer - George Canyon.

Immediately, I noticed George in a handsome stylish black Manuel sequin jacket, black pants, black hat. He looked awesome and had star quality. He sang "Good Day To Ride"; a song with many meanings. He dedicated this song to a special couple, whose son had lost his life recently. Still an amazing song and performance. Here are what the judges remarks were:
  • Billy: George, you win first and foremost because the radio loves a good up tempo song. And, secondly you got the right name. I think you could be the next George Strait for the next 20 years. Nice job, that was great!
  • Warren Bros: The song wasn't that great to me. But, you know what, you do everything right. You come out here like a professional every week. As an American, all I want to know is that you're gonna support our troops as a Canadian? Alright? I'm just kidding. It was really great.
  • Tracy: You know what, you're always consistent. You're always good.
Fourth performer - Sheila Marshall.

Throughout the series the judges continue to think she has a rock country sound. Some that have talked with me think she has a strong voice but, with a Melissa Etheridge like sound. I think she has a good voice. Her song was creative. She sang "Shoulda Said That". Here are what the judges remarks were:
  • Warren Bros: Your voice is so good, you can sing anything and it would be pretty good. It wasn't my favorite song, which means Billy Greenwood would probably play the crap out of it. Brett: You have a great voice, But I can tell Rodney Crowell didn't co-write that with you. Billy:No, we wouldn't play that.
  • Tracy: You know I agree with the Warren's to a certain extent but, I tell ya what. I believed you this week. It was a good song for you, because I believed you, and obviously because you wrote it.
  • Billy: Sheila, I thought your performance was a little course. But, I would say this we wouldn't play it on the radio but, we would play it before, we played the Warren Brothers.
Nancy is in the audience with Rodney Crowell. She asks him this "What ingredients make a good country song?" Rodney replies, "Believability, relatibility,. a really good melody and a good rhyme scheme; most importantly a really good song will show you a part of yourself and put you in touch with some sort of emotion; tenderness of your heart. It can have humor; it can be fun and, some cleverness helps."
