It's easy to become a little jaded when reviewing CD's of independent artist. So many times you hear the enthusiasm of a person who has laid their heart and soul on the line, to become the next Alan Jackson or Martina McBride, only to find that the person does not have the talent or knowledge of songwriting to succeed, but every once and a while, you stumble across a CD from someone, who just blows you away.

Recently I have had the pleasure of listening to "A Little at a Time" by Independent Artist, Chris Young. Upon first inspection of the CD, you could tell that it was not a home produced CD. The front insert and J-wrap were actually printed by a printing company, which in turn lead me to believe that the CD was commercially produced.

After further inspection, you can see the graphics contain inlays, fades, and collages, which also told me that this was not the first rodeo for the graphic designer or the photographer.

All photos of the CD are in black and white; with the exception of the front cover and wrap, which are B&W with an artistic hint of 4 colors. The CD has a B&W label (2 color is standard for a label, meaning they could have had a 2 color label for the same price as the black and white). I digress that maybe they wanted the label to continue the theme of the black and white of the insert.

When reading the credit of the insert, I see that Chris is listed with such notable songwriters as James L. Campbell, Lance Allen, Kerry Ford, Chuck McLugin, Ron Grimes and Don Bobbitt.

As I cross my fingers and inserted the CD into the player, I had feared the worst. The first track was "Only if you Want to". My first impression was, uncross your fingers because this person can actually sing, The CD is very well produced and although I didn't hear a Jerry Douglas on Dobro or a Sam Bush on Mandolin, the musicians of Velvet Elvis Studios are very capable.
