Never have I been to such a well planned and orchestrated Bluegrass Music festival. All of the entertainment was held in a huge tin covered, dirt floored barn, complete with a year round stage, lighting, tables and dance floor. Great old time collectibles and antiques adorned the magnificent concert hall (barn). Among our favorites were the old ice-cream vendor bicycle and the remnants of a double-seated outhouse.
During the short breaks in between bands, there were several give-a ways and drawings ranging from country hams, T-shirts to a $6000.00 Gibson Banjo.
The doors opened to the public several days in advance, for overnight camping and motor homes (offered at a minimal charge). Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner were served on site for the entire duration of the festival, and we're talking home cooked meals. Some of the food offerings provided by the Smiley Hollow Cooks, included turnip greens, catfish, BBQ and white beans. Several food booths were also available for the hamburger and hotdog crowd. Some of the beverage choices included southern favorites such as Lemonade, Sweet Tea and Budweiser.
There were plenty of free on-site activities for the entire family including a miniature golf course, basketball courts, and playground for children, volleyball court, hayrides and even the Martha White Bus was on hand for tours. Some of the other vendor's included; Bluegrass Now Magazine, Station Inn, Springfield Guitar, Odom's Tennessee Pride Sausage and more.
Writers Review:
While Attending the Friday night show it was a full moon and an ever so slight breeze coming thru one of the many barn doors along the occasional falling oak leaves, the band, Pine Mountain Railroad, was playing "Tennessee Eyes". You could see hundreds of couples from young to old move a little closer to each other, some even holding hands and giving an occasional kiss. At that point we knew that we had found Heaven in Tennessee, along with many others that night, I give this Festival a definite thumbs-up and a definite mark your calendar, got-to-go event.
