Nashville Storm Skin the Asheville Grizzlies 43-6 in NAFL Opener at McGavock
Nathaniel Claybrooks (Maplewood/MTSU) couldn't stay retired. And once the former MTSU first team 1-AA All-American LB put on his familiar #44 jersey, he played like he was "tanned, rested, and ready" with 2 1/2 tackles for losses, a sack of Asheville QB Darren Clarke and a bat-down of a Clarke pass attempt on 4th down to end an Asheville drive. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, Phellepe Hall (Maplewood/TSU) threw TD passes to Antonio Dilworth (Lane College) and Gary Peete (AF2 Memphis Xplorers) as the Nashville Storm (3-1, 1-0) opened their NAFL regular season last night with a 43-6 victory over the Asheville Grizzlies (1-1, 0-1) at McGavock High School.
The Storm rotated Johnathan "Bama" Carter, Monroe Simmons, Antwan Ross (Lebanon/Huron University), and Jemmel Roberts at RB, and all were effective. Roberts scored 2 TDs and Carter 1 TD as the Storm running attack complemented QB Hall's 11 for 20 (178 yards) passing performance. Nashville outgained Asheville 352-218 in total offense, as the Storm, on defense, had 11 tackles for losses for the 2nd straight game, led by Claybrooks and DE Lonnie Harris (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) (3 TFL).
The Storm scoring began with Hall's 35-yard TD pass to Dilworth on the Storm's second possession in the 1st quarter; then Roberts' 1-yard 2nd Qtr TD run gave the Storm a 14-0 lead going into halftime.
The Grizzlies opened the 2nd half by narrowing the Storm lead to 14-6 on Cortez Oliver's 62-yard TD run and appeared ready to make a competitive game of it; however, the Storm responded quickly, as Hall's 30 yard TD pass to Gary Peete capped a 6-play, 65-yard drive to give the Storm a 21-6 lead. The Storm then turned the game into a blowout in the 4th Quarter behind Carter's 3-yard TD run, a 36-yard TD pass from Gary Peete (now at QB) to Marquis Douglas, and Roberts' 2nd rushing TD of the night, an 18-yarder.
The Storm return to action this coming Saturday, July 15, as they take on the Memphis-based Tennessee Xtreme (1-1) at McGavock High School at 7 PM.
