Sunday June 18, 2006
In a turnaround of form, a dominant Nashville Storm defense bailed out a struggling Nashville Storm offense, as the Storm defeated the Middle Tennessee Football League All-Star Team by a score of 12-0 in a game that was a scoreless tie at the half.
A superb MTFL All-Star defensive front held the Storm offense, averaging 215 ypg rushing going into the game, to 0 rushing yards. Storm QB Phellepe Hall (Maplewood/TSU) threw for 219 yards on 16 for 32 passing, but suffered from several dropped balls by intended receivers. Albert Winn(TSU) led the Storm receivers with 82 yards on 6 catches, including a 35-yard TD catch for the game's first score in the 3rd Quarter.
While the MTFL All-Star defense played superbly, the Nashville Storm defense was even better, holding the All-Stars to 92 offensive yards, gaining 11 lost-yardage tackles or QB sacks, and forcing 3 All-Star turnovers. DE Lonnie Harris (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) had a big debut game in a Storm uniform with 2.5 QB sacks, while DT Anthony Hardy (Maplewood/North Carolina) had 3 TFL, and Roger Moore (Glencliff/Missouri Western), normally a WR, intercepted a pass for a 41-yard return and recovered a fumbled All-Star punt return.
The Storm didn't clinch the game until Jeremie "Bird" Whittaker(Coahoma CC), another Storm player playing his first game, ran 20 yards for the TD that gave the Storm a 12-0 lead with only 28 seconds left to go in the game.
The MTFL All-Stars concluded play with this game, while the Nashville Storm conclude preseason play with a 2-1 record. The Storm have 2 bye weekends before opening NAFL league play on Saturday night, July 8 at 7 PM at McGavock High School (3160 McGavock Pike, Nashville,TN 37214) against the Asheville Grizzlies.
