Finding The Online Truth : Seigenthaler vs.Wikipedia

Sunday December 11, 2005
John Seigenthaler Sr, one of Nashville's most respected and well-liked members of our community recently found his bio falsely listed on Wikipedia, a free-content encyclopedia where anyone can edit entries and also used by many as a web research destination.

This well-publicized controversy has raised a host of concerns about the validity of online content from across the nation.

Wikipedia has since replaced the false information on John Seigenthaler and has implemented stricter posting guidelines, but one still has to wonder if Wikipedia will continue to list itself as "The biggest multilingual open access encyclopedia on the internet ?"

Excerpt of John Seigenthaler's false bio:
“John Seigenthaler Sr. was the assistant to Attorney General Robert Kennedy in the early 1960’s. For a brief time, he was thought to have been directly involved in the Kennedy assassinations of both John, and his brother, Bobby. Nothing was ever proven.”

Excerpt from Wikipedia:
"Wikipedia content is intended to be factual, notable, verifiable with external sources, and neutrally presented, with external sources cited. It is a collation of knowledge".

Read an editorial from USA Today from John Seigenthaler

Listen to NPR's audio interview of both Seigenthaler and Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia founder.

As a Nashvillian, Parent and an Online Journalist, I applaud you, John Seigenthaler Sr., for bringing this controversy into the public eye and doing so, in your own a eloquent way.
